A relatively small, multi-purpose, curly coated breed, the Spanish Water Dog as been employed in a variety of roles, including guarding and herding sheep, but his main function is still considered to be retrieving from water.

Intelligent and willing workers with an impressive memory and independent mind, the Spanish Water Dog can be inclined towards bossiness and will try to take charge if he is allowed to do so.

The Spanish Water Dog does not respond well to harsh, out-dated training methods which will be counter productive and result in an unreliable, anxious and distrusting dog.
