Sheepdog Trials

sheepdog trialsFor many years dogs have been bred to develop the traits of intelligence, stamina and obedience necessary to assist farmers and shepherds control their flocks, often in harsh and difficult environments.

As far as possible, the conditions and work to be encountered in everyday shepherding on the hills and farms are followed at sheepdog trials. They are not intended as a succession of 'tricks' or gimmicky obstacles, but rather a practical demonstration of the skills the dog uses every day of his working life.

Many of the dogs you see on the trials field will have been at work on the farm, probably that very morning before setting off for the trial.

People from many walks of life are becoming interested in sheepdog handling.  Traditionally, shepherds and farmers were the only people skilled to handle the dogs.  Today, with the help of training centres and sheepdog handling clubs, many more people are discovering the delights of working sheepdogs.
