Rhodesian Ridgeback

Considered a native breed of South Africa, the Rhodesian Ridgeback (or African Lion Hound) is a descendant of dogs domesticated by the Hottentot tribes and discovered in the early 16th Century when European settlers started to explore the Cape of Good Hope. These dogs had a 'ridge' of hair along their back that grew in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat, a trait only known in one other breed found on the island of Phu Quoc in the Gulf of Siam.. and it is believed that these dogs originate from the ridged dogs of South Africa.

It is believed that the Ridgebacks of today are the result of mixed breeding between these African dogs and various other breeds accompanying early travellers such as Bloodhounds, Great Danes, Greyhounds, Mastiffs and Pointers.

Modern Rhodesian Ridgebacks are dependable, reliable and intelligent. Protective but not fierce, aloof but not shy, trainable and balanced.
