Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Descendants of two Newfoundland type puppies, rescued from a wrecked ship off of Maryland and later crossed with local flat and curly coated retrievers, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is the ultimate naturally waterproof dog. His thick oily coat, webbed toes, undoubted courage and inexhaustible energy perfectly equip him for work as a duck-dog.

Although similar in appearance to the Labrador, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a somewhat larger breed with a very different personality. Tough, muscular, hearty and good natured.

Totally loyal to his owner and family, and an effective guard if the need arises, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a strong, independent dog. Bred for generations as a working gun dog, he excels at his job, especially in water. He craves company, and needs an active lifestyle or a working life to provide sufficient mental and physical stimulation.
