Pyrenean Sheepdog

Highly intelligent, courageous and hard working, the Pyrenean Sheepdog, while smaller than some sheepdogs, is a loyal and willing herder with tremendous stamina and drive.

The Pyrenean Sheepdog developed in parallel to his larger and more widely known colleague, the Pyrenean Mountain Dog. While the larger breed guarded the flock against predators such as bears, wolves, lynx and foxes, the smaller, more agile, sure footed Pyrenean Sheepdog was selectively bred by shepherds for his herding instinct, stamina and work ethic.

Very much a one-man dog, dedicated to and desperate to please his owner the Pyrenean Sheepdog, in common with other herding and working breeds, needs to be busy. He excels at dog sports such as flyball, competitive obedience and agility. Thorough, ongoing socialisation and training is required to prevent the breed's natural wariness and herd instinct becoming bossiness, shyness or aggression.
