Portuguese Water Dog

Although called the Portuguese Water Dog, this breed shares a common history with other European water dogs. His ancestors probably first arrived in Portugal with travelling traders, where his great love of water, and trainability quickly won favour with native fishermen who employed him to retrieve lost nets. As well as being a strong swimmer, the Portuguese Water Dog has the ability to dive underwater if necessary.

The Portuguese Water Dog has two recognised coat types, this first is long and loosely waved, the second short with compact curls. The coat requires clipping rather than being shed. The traditional 'Lion Cut' would have afforded the fisherman's dog some protection from the cold water around his vital organs while leaving his powerful hind-quarters free movement to swim. More recently some owners have favoured an all-over even clipping style.

Portuguese Water dogs make excellent companions. They are loving, independent, and intelligent and are easily trained in obedience and agility skills.
