Raising A Well Mannered Dog ...

... Effective, Positive Pet Dog Training

From the very first day that you bring your new puppy home the clock is ticking. Modifiying behaviour will only get more difficult as your new pup grows, so don’t waste a day.

The first items on the agenda are housetraining and chewtoy-training. You need to teach your pup where to go to the toilet and what to chew. You also need to teach your pup that the rules apply whether or not you are around, and that there’s no need to be anxious when you are out of sight. All of this is made easier with a doggy-den and puppy-playpen: safe, comfortable, short-term and long-term confinement areas that will help your puppy learn the rules, so that later she can be trusted around the rest of the house.

It is also absolutely essential that puppies learn to like people and to enjoy being handled by them. Puppies need to be introduced to, and gently handled by, numerous unfamiliar adults and children. Without proper socialisation puppies will almost certainly develop fears about strangers, these fears can escalate over time into defensive or aggressive behaviour. At best this will result in a stressed and unhappy dog, at worst it could result in the dog being abandoned to rescue or even destroyed.

Continued socialisation outside of the home, introducing your pup calmly and non-threateningly, to a wide variety of situations and experiences is the next step. Puppy classes, puppy parties and puppy play dates enable your pup to interact and play with other pups, learning to play appropriately and developing bite inhibition.

Combining active socialisation with daily positive training methods will raise a dog who is confident and relaxed in all situations. A dog you can enjoy sharing your life with.
