Also known as the Continental Toy Spaniel, this breed has both erect and drop eared varieties, the erect ear types are named Papillon, after the French word for butterfly, while the drop-eared types are named Phalene after the moth.

Somewhat hardier than his exquisitely delicate appearance suggests, the Papillon is very much a dog and as such requires patient but firm leadership to establish and maintain household boundaries, without which he can develop possessive and jealous tendencies.

Sociable and affectionate he both loves and requires human company.
