Currently one of the most vulnerable native UK breeds, the Otterhound is reputedly one of the oldest English breeds dating as far back as the 12th century when otters were considered vermin and hounds were used to protect fishponds holding food stocks. Otter hunting was banned in the late 1970's.

A dog for the energetic, outdoors loving family rather than the house-proud; the rugged Otterhound is a kindly, amiable chap with a weather-resistant rough, double coat and a fabulous bass voice.

Otterhounds are scent hounds and have been bred for their ability to use their nose to track therefore when exercising they are better kept on a flexi-lead unless you are in a securely fenced area.
