Norwegian Elkhound

This sturdy, solidly built Scandinavian hound was originally used to track and then distract Elk, holding the prey at bay by barking, thereby allowing the hunter to locate and shoot his target.

Their tendency to bark extends beyond the Moose - and should be controlled from an early age to prevent the behaviour becoming a nuisance.

The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient hardy Spitz type breed, he is a loyal companion, intelligent, friendly and outgoing, with a great character. Despite an independent streak he is happiest when he feels that he is part of the family. This is a dog ready for adventure and so much the better if that adventure takes place outdoors in cold weather.
