Still used to protect flocks and property in his native Italy, the large, majestic Maremma Sheepdog has a highly developed guard instinct.
Centuries of breeding have produced a dog capable of making his own decisions and working without human direction, gentle with lambs but a fierce and fearless protector of the flock, willing and able to deter and defend against wolves, bears, stray dogs and thieves.
In a domestic setting this translates into an independently minded, territorial dog which is calm, gentle and loyally devoted to his immediate family, but suspicious of, and potentially hostile towards, outsiders and other dogs.
