The development of the Dobermann is credited to a German tax inspector who required a dog both for protection and as a means of 'encouraging' slow payers. Elegant, intelligent, alert and strong the Dobermann has an adaptable outlook and is a skilful tracker.

Like tail docking, ear cropping has been banned in many countries, therefore Doberbanns today are more usually seen with naturally dropped, rather than erect, ears and complete tails.

The Dobermann responds well to calm, patient, firm leadership, neither appreciating, nor forgetting, harsh handling. He needs plenty of mental and physical exercise in to which his considerable energies can be channelled.
