Bouvier Des Flandres

Bouvier roughly translates to 'oxherd' or 'cattle herder' and many regions developed their own type of dog to fulfil this role. The rugged and powerful Bouvier des Flanders was employed during WWI as an ambulance dog and as a messenger, gaining him a wider reputation.

Despite his formidable appearance, accentuated by his eyebrows, beard and moustache, the Bouvier des Flanders is an amiable dog with a stable temperament.

The modern Bouvier des Flandres still fulfills a variety of jobs ranging from police dog, guide dog, military dog and baby sitter. These excellent family dogs show great devotion to their owners and are well known for their empathy with children. They are not a demanding dog needing extreme amounts of exercise to keep them happy, but companionship is top of their requirements so they are definitely not a yard or kennel dog.
