Bernese Mountain Dog

One of a group of four tricolour Swiss working dogs known as Sennenhund, the strikingly handsome Bernese Mountain Dog, otherwise known as the Bouvier Bernois or Swiss Cattle Dog, is the second largest and only one with a long coat.

As a breed which thrives on working closely with its owners, driving cattle to and from alpine pastures, guarding the farm, and pulling small wagons or carts for the weavers of Berne, the versatile and willing Bernese wants to be with its owners and to take part in every activity, this is not a breed suited to kennel life or to being kept away from the family.

With a personality as attractive as his appearance is impressive, this slow maturing breed of above average size can be lively, energetic and full of fun, but can also be inclined to be stubborn and wilful. His double coat requires regular grooming and early socialisation and training is essential.
