In common with other short-legged Basset's originating from various regions of France, the Grand Basset Griffon Vendeen is closely related to a shorter cousin, in this case the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen. The two were still frequently interbred until as recently as the 1970s.
Perhaps taller than he appears from a distance, this delightful dog, with a sense of humour, happy and confident personality and efficient nose is a canine escapologist with a typical hound tendency to 'selective hearing' and suiting himself whilst scenting - but they are great companions.
At heart this is a pack dog who would be happier living with, or spending a good deal of time with, a canine companion. This is a strong, active and outgoing hound
