Australian Shepherd

Distant relatives of the Australian Shepherd were taken from the Basque region of the Pyrenees Mountains between Spain and France to work with herders in Australia. When the herders later arrived in the USA bringing their dogs with them they were given the Australian Shepherd name.

An intelligent and highly active breed, the Australian Shepherd has excelled in obedience, agility and tracking as well as his more traditional herding role.

While calm and easy going when he has a job to do, an under-stimulated Australian Shepherd will invent his own amusement, which will almost certainly be viewed as hyperactivity. Smart, good-natured and highly trainable, this breed needs an active home and an experienced handler in order to fulfil his potential.
