Also known as the Red, Blue, Australian or Queensland Heeler, the Australian Cattle Dog was developed to work in harsh, extreme environments and over vast areas.
He can include Dingo, Dalmatian, Smooth Collie, Kelpie and Bull Terrier among his ancestors. The name 'Heeler' refers to the manner in which he works, nipping at the heels of cattle to move them.
Tough, rugged and dependable the Australian Cattle Dog is capable of working tirelessly for hours, in unrelenting heat and bitter cold. This energy and drive needs to channelled in the non-working dog, otherwise he will make his own entertainment, which is likely to be destructive.
Strong-willed, resourceful and incredibly intelligent, the Australian Cattle Dog can be a rewarding and devoted partner as long as he is shown strong, consistent leadership, and provided with plenty of meaningful activity.
