Native to Japan, the Akita Inu (meaning 'large dog') can trace his ancestors back to the Spitz type dogs of the polar regions. The powerful and dignified Akita was originally developed as a fighting dog and later used to hunt bear, boar and deer.

Impressive in stance, appearance and strength the Akita has a quiet and reserved character, although is he dominant of, and occasionally aggressive towards, other dogs. Courageous and alert, affectionate and loyal, devoted to and protective of his owners the Akita makes an excellent guard but is not recommended for the novice dog owner.

The UK Kennel Club separated the Akita and his close relative the Japanese Akita Inu in 2006. The Akita owes some of it's recent development to the USA, he is heavier and more substantial than the Japanese Akita Inu, which, of the two, is considered closer to the original type of dog bred in Japan.
